Sleeping in a heatwave can be hard for both adults and children. Our homes are definitely not set up for the kind of heat we have been having over the last few weeks and the lighter evenings can make sleeping for little ones difficult. There are however a few simple ideas to try and help everyone get a better nights sleep.
5 easy ways to get a better nights sleep in the warm Summer months
Install blackout blinds
Blackout blinds are a must for children’s bedrooms, but also fantastic for adults rooms, especially in the Summer months. They can really help to help you get a full nights sleep as you won’t find light streaming in at 5 am. They can be easily installed and don’t cost a fortune so you can make sure everyone in the household has one.
Keep blinds shut in the day
If it’s really hot then keep blinds shut throughout the day to keep the warmth of the sun out. Blackout blinds can really help with this.
Open windows in the cooler parts of the day
Keep windows shut in the hotter parts of the day as you don’t want lots of warm air in the house. Once it’s cooled down in the evenings open them to get air circulating before bedtime and open them up in the morning to get the cool air in before the heat of the day.
If you’re worried about large windows and children then creep in once they’re asleep, open them wide and then shut them again when you go to sleep – this will help cool their rooms for a few hours in the cooler part of the day.
Buy a fan
A fan, or ideally an air conditioner will really help in warmer weather. If you have a fan try and use it when the windows are open in the cooler parts of the day to circulate cooler air rather than hot air.
Try a few ‘no cost’ tricks
There are a few tricks to cool everyone down without having to spend any money. Firstly rinse a big towel in cold water ring it out and then leave on an airer in the room you want to cool. The humidity will be drawn to the towel and will help to keep rooms a little more comfortable. You can also make sure children have cooler baths before bed, iced water on their bedside tables and dress them in as little as possible.
How do you make sure you get a good nights sleep in the Summer months?
