Top 5 UK winter beach destinations

November 6, 2017

UK beach holidays hold a special place in my heart, we holidayed in Cornwall every year until I was a teen and now my parents live in Dorset, so we love being by the sea as much as we can.

For lots, going to the beach in the UK is firmly a summer thing, but for me I have to say that my favourite time to visit UK beach destinations is in the Winter, or off season.

There are less crowds, the beaches look stunning, if wrapped up long walks earn long lunches and kids can still play in the sand. This is assuming it isn’t raining, sometimes we are lucky!

Here are mine and two other bloggers top 5 UK winter beach destinations.

1. North Cornwall Coast

Beautiful sandy beaches, amazing coastal walks and quaint seaside towns North Cornwall is definitely a favourite. We love St Ives or Newquay and there are some brilliant family friendly hotels around. Try Watergate Bay, Sands Resort or Tregenna Castle Resort in St Ives.

2. Dorset

We love Dorset, for it’s stunning coastline but also for it’s family friendly activities. There is lots to do from fossil hunting along the jurassic coast, Weymouth with both indoor and outdoor activities, Monkey World and beautiful towns like Lyme Regis, Bridport and Dorchester.

3. Norfolk

Laura from Woman in progress loves Norfolk, she says: “I love North Hunstanton beach – in fact I think I love it more in the winter, when it’s deserted and the light is magical and it’s completely freezing justifying a hot chocolate when we finish.  Bliss.”

4. Rye

Kristie from Mammaprada recently spent a weekend in Rye and said: “Living in London we find getting out to a beach to blow away the cobwebs a real necessity! For us beautiful Rye and the beach here at Winchelsea are the perfect spot for exploring and collecting pebbles – my children’s favourite pastime”

5. South Cornwall Coast

There are beautiful places to visit on the South Cornwall coast, one of our favourites being Carlyon Bay. Three sandy beaches here create a beautiful setting come summer or winter. There are lots of attractions nearby if the rain comes in, try the Eden Project, a brewery tour and for the little ones Kidzworld or the local The Seahorse Centre.

Do you love UK beaches in the Winter or do you prefer them in the Summer? Where is your favourite?

Some of my favourite times are during Winter. We’re lucky enough to live in Poole, Dorset and one of my favourite tings to do on Christmas day (weather permitting) is to go for a walk along the beach. Winter times means the beaches are more deserted and lovely for a wander. Great time of year for a beach visit.

    Oh darling… what beautiful choices.
I owe B a trip to the seaside & arcades but haven’t thought about going in the winter… but you know what. I may just brave it for him.

I hadn’t heard of the majority of these places so thank you for sharing them

Cornwall and Dorset beaches are amazing. For me the best time is on a hot summers evening when it’s still warm but quieter. You cannot beat it x

Yes that sounds amazing! With the girls we always have to be home for dinner / bed so when they’re older I’ll look forward to being out later. ‪Thanks for reading xx‬
