Hello and welcome back to another week of Mama You Can, a series started to started to share inspirational stories of Mama’s who have changed career direction, started their own business or negotiated a more flexible role to fit in with family life.
This week we hear from Kathryn from Best Day Ever Party Shop who has the most gorgeous party decorations and inspiration on her Instagram feed. We used some decorations from Best Day Ever Party Shop for Amelie’s birthday and loved everything we had.
Mama You Can: Kathryn from Best Day Ever Party Shop
Hello, my name is Kathryn, I’m the Co-founder of Best Day Ever Party Shop and I live in Croydon with my husband James and little girl Annie who is nearly two years old. Best Day Ever Party Shop is a website selling stylish Party Decorations for all occasions.
Before Best Day Ever I was a Textile Buyer for a well-known high street department store. I always wanted to set something up on my own but being made redundant six months into my maternity leave, gave me the push to go for it.
I didn’t have a choice about leaving my job but after a decade (wow) in the fast paced, high pressure retail world I was ready for a change. It’s definitely a cliché about priorities changing when you have a baby but it’s the only way to describe it. Making the decision to not go back into the retail world was terrifying but exciting. I still craved a creative outlet but needed flexibility to fit around Annie. I couldn’t see how I would manage the commute across London every day, leaving the house before 7 and not getting back before Annie’s bedtime. It wasn’t going to work for me so going it alone and setting up Best Day Ever Party Shop has made work suit me and my family.
Once I’d made the decision to set something up myself instead of looking for employment, I took the rest of my ‘Maternity leave’ to make sure the vision was achievable. I remember having drinks with my BFF (and now business partner) on New Year’s Eve last year and talking about our plans and feeling so passionate about it I knew I was making the right decision. It was always going to be scary but it’s the kind of fear that gives you the adrenaline to get through the late nights and have the confidence in yourself to make the big decisions.
I have always been ambitious and I’m in no way afraid of hard work. I feel this is key when setting up your own business. It is not an ’easy option’ but I’m so pleased I’ve gone for it. Best Day Ever Party Shop website has only been live since April and there is so much more I want to achieve with it and so much more I want to do. It really is just the beginning and hopefully it will continue to go from strength to strength. The support I’ve had so far from customers and my ‘InstaFam’ has been incredible! Thank you!
When asked for advice on setting up your own business or blog I always say go for it. If you’re passionate, committed and not afraid of hard work then you should just do it. I’m often guilty of over thinking things and wanting everything to be ’perfect’, but sometimes it’s better to jump in and see what happens. The best bit of advice I was ever given was to ‘start before you’re ready, otherwise you’ll never start’.
Thanks so much to Kathryn for sharing her story, I love the advice, ‘start before you’re ready, otherwise you’ll never start’ it’s so true, you’ll never know everything when you first start something and I am a real believer that you ‘learn on the job’.
