! So a big thank you again to all of the wonderful mama’s sharing their stories, you are certainly an inspiration to lots of us and I am loving reading all of these stories.
This week I am really excited to bring you the story of Aman who has recently founded The Baby Service. This is the business I dream of owning, so if I disappear after this week to start a new business you know what I’m doing!
I’m joking, Aman you are certainly the expert, so it’s over to her to tell us her story…
Mama You Can with Aman Raithatha @thebabyservice
Hello, my name is Aman and I recently founded The Baby Service, an appointment only shopping experience for expectant parents based in Chobham, Surrey. You could say that I’m slightly baby obsessed and you’ll usually find me obsessing over the latest pushchair wheel suspension or (politely) forcing my 20-month-old daughter into a baby sling. We call it product testing!
It wasn’t always changing mats and baby grows, I was previously in Luxury PR & Marketing and was lucky enough to work for brands such as Prada, Gucci, Alberta Ferretti and Guinot. I loved everything about the fast pace and flashing lights of the city. Four years ago my husband Jay and I moved to Ascot and with all the excitement of the fresh country air we fell pregnant with our darling Ava sooner than we had planned.
I quickly understood that I wouldn’t be able to cope with the demands and lifestyle of PR & Marketing. I was also lacking the drive and enthusiasm that I had once had for my career and I knew it was because I wanted more. I needed something that allowed me to be hands on mummy and a businesswoman. The inspiration behind The Baby Service was Ava as the idea came to me whilst I was pregnant. I was confused, tired and overwhelmed by busy department stores and endless opinions that would vary by the day. Creating a private space for parents to shop, be ‘professionally’ advised and have the opportunity to ask endless questions was what I imagined. I was also tired of having to travel into London for the extra special items and couldn’t understand why we didn’t have it in Surrey! I then started spending more time thinking and scribbling down ideas. I just knew that I was onto something.
I have to be honest; my initial decision to start The Baby Service was instant and that came straight from my heart. However, I then had to convince my mind and that took time, research and meticulous planning. Starting my own business was a dream but I needed time to work on the logistics. Luckily my husband Jay who is experienced in this field and has the patience of a saint, became my mentor. He helped me plan and understand what was to be expected.
There was a huge mix of emotions in the lead up to my decision. I was nervous but excited and that’s what drove me to take the plunge. I was mostly worried about not having a steady income that I was used to but I was so passionate about what was to come that I was prepared to take that on.
Once I’d made the decision to start my business there was nothing that could hold me back. I was relieved knowing that I was able to shape and determine my future from that day onwards.
Starting a small independent business has its challenges and there were times at the beginning where I was hearing ‘no’ more than ‘yes’. At these times I did think if I had made the right decision but a friend once told me to celebrate the small wins and if you truly love what you do, success will follow. I can honestly say that was the best advice I received. I never looked back and took each day as it came and today I’m so proud of everything I’ve achieved.
My advice to other Mama’s thinking about making a career change would be to never quieten that voice inside. It takes one single idea and the power of determination to transport a dream into reality. Above all I would always recommend taking your time when making that decision, if it’s meant to be it will wait for you.
Thanks so much to Aman for sharing her story. You are making me want another baby so I can come and see you! If you want to see or find out more about The Baby Service you can find them on Instagram here @thebabyservice
